Active Directory (AD)

Active Directory is an implementation of LDAP directory services by Microsoft for use in Windows environments. Active Directory allows administrators to assign enterprise wide policies, deploy programs to many computers, and apply critical updates to an entire organization. An Active Directory stores information and settings relating to an organization in a central, organized, accessible database. Active Directory networks can vary from a small installation with a few hundred objects, to a large installation with millions of objects.

In layperson's terms, AD logins will allow secure access, in each classroom, to a file server. Users will be able to access their folder from their office machines and transfer data to the server for use in the classroom. Users will not be required to use AD logins in their offices, though they certainly may if they choose to. The server is called "gpc" for general purpose classrooms. In the classrooms, the computers will, apon AD login, automatically map to the user's folder on this server. This folder has already been created for you! The letter designated for this mapped drive is "K:". Instructors using Windows 2000 or newer version and logging in using AD, will be able to download and run a script from this website to map this drive automatically! Simple instructions are provided here for other users who wish to map the drive on their own. Click here for more information on why Active Directory is being implemented at UNL.

Take full advantage of the computers in your GP classrooms! Complete this simple checklist...

1. Click here to activate your AD account! Note: Some of you may already be logging in to "UNL-AD". If so, you may skip this step (your AD logon will work in any of ITG's classrooms). If you're unsure, you should contact your department computer technician and ask for advice.

2. Remember your AD username and password! See UNL Policies for effective passwords.

3. Click here for information on how to map your "K:" drive. This allows easy access to the file server from your office! When you have completed this step, you may begin transferring files from your office computer to the File Server. Note: If your department has already provided you with server space, it may not be necessary to complete this step. Ask your department's computer technician for details.

4. Assuming the first three steps went smoothly, you're AD username and password will now allow you to use the classroom computers and securely access your server files. You may access your folder through "My Computer" on Windows. Mac users will find their folder right on the desktop. Please remember to log out after your session!
